8 tips to help you get started !

Start your career now in the WAPES community with some essential tips shared by the pro's ! Goalkeeping is maybe the most nerve racking position to play in the league. One day you are the hero, another day you make a mistake. Your performance is crucial for the team.

1. Camera settings

We do not recommend using the Pro camera. Prefer a regular horizontal camera angle because it will give you a better overview of the situation which is key to understand the outcomes of the play. It also gives you better vision and confidence for passing if you want to be involved in the build-up.

2. Positioning

(Hold "pressure" button) to keep your player in auto-positioning mode. This will ensure you stay central in the penalty box. Then use ("special controls" button) to jockey and manualy position yourself. Be carefull this is very sensible, you dont want to turn away and expose your goal. Once the feeling gets better and you gain experience in reading the game, you can speculate and start anticipating more.

Part of the excitement of manual goalkeeping are the mind games when facing one on one situations. You can decide to hold "X" to play conservatively, or also try and move manually with Jockeying ("R2" or "special controls" button), applying pressure to the attacker. When they feel there's a brain in the keeper, they can get nervous !

3. look at your defense

Position yourself regarding to your defenders. If your defenders are blocking one side of the goal, jockey to the other side where there is a shot opening.

4. Diving & Reaction saves

For diving saves use the (Left Stick) for direction + (Press "Pressure" button). For example, you can hold your position with auto-position, and when the ball hits the goal, you let go of auto-position and dive in the direction of the ball.

For reaction saves use the (Left Stick) for direction + (Press "Sliding tackle button"). This save is mainly for blind shots or facing a low cross with an attacker incoming shortly to shoot.

The diving animations depend on your GK stats, as well as your own positioning and timing. You have to be patient and careful. If you move too soon, you will be to far from the save.

5. Bring out the keeper

To automatically bring out keeper towards the ball, hold (Sprint + Hold "COM Teamates pressure" button). You can also manualy anticipate. Postion well + Double tap X button to tackle the ball from the attacker.

6. penalties

Before the kicker takes the penalty, you can try to mentally destabilize him! Clapping, pointing at either direction, or opening your arms wide (with X, square, circle, or triangle). Also, you can slightly position yourself to either side to bait the kicker. There are two ways to dive:

You initiate strong dive before shot comes. (Ideal to block strong shots) OR you wait until the last second and dive after the shot comes. (Ideal to block weaker finesse shots)

7. BAL Keeper creation

In WAPES League as a goalkeeper, you can choose 3 skills (2 goalkeeper skills + 1 field player skill). Choose what skills fit the style of keeper you want to become.

GK player skills :

  • GK high punt (lob button) : A deep and high arc punt. Ideal to look for space deep behind enemy defense.

  • GK low punt (lob button) : A fast and low arc punt. Ideal to pass to man directly for a counter, either a winger or target man

  • GK long throw (hold Pass button) : Ideal for long ball possession, or starting counters.

  • GK penalty kick : Better goalkeeping reactions in penalty kicks.

GK player stats :

  • GK awareness: Better auto-positioning

  • GK catching: The ability to catch the ball without giving rebound. (helpful when facing strong shots, or intercepting a cross or corner in the air)

  • GK clearing: Has to do with how strong or safely and far from attackers you can clear a cross or shot.

  • GK reach: Has to do with how long can a GK dive from an initial position (Helpful to reach those well placed shots in goal)

  • GK reflexes: Has to do with how fast the GK can react on 1 on 1 or close shots.

Other attributes that matter :

  • Height, Jump, Physical contact.

8. NEVER DESPAIR

At first it will be difficult learning, but never give up. You will learn from your mistakes and need a lot of training and experience before you become reliable in goals. Just like a Striker, it's about being in the right place at the right time. Positioning is key, but also anticipation.
